Descripción o resumen: In 1855, Alexander Bain brought analyses of the mind and nervous system together in The Senses and the Intellect. In the 50 years that followed, psychology established itself as a scientific discipline in its own right, related to but separate from both the philosophy of mind and the physiology of the nervous system. This collection documents the birth of scientific psychology. In addition to the volumes of Bain, the 51 volumes feature texts by Taine, Ribot, Lotze, Hoffding and Ladd. They also include works on: experimentalism (Fechner, Helmholtz, Wundt, Ebbinghaus, Mach, Kulpe, Titchener); functionalism (Sepncer, Romanes, James); mind/body treatises (Maudsley, Carpenter, Ferrier, Lewes, Jackson); analyses in the psychology of individual differences (Galton, Binet); animal mind/behaviour (Morgan, Hobhouse, Thorndike, Washburn); development (Baldwin, Claparede); and social phenomena (McDougall); early scientific contributions to psychotherapy (Bernheim, Tuckey, Janet, Prince); and applied psychology (Scott, Munsterberg). Wherever possible each title is reprinted from the first English edition where one exists. These American and European writings span the age between the ideas of Darwin and Freud, and should also be of interest to those studying philosophy, sociology, education and psychotherapy.
